Dr. Mahathir, Lee Kuan Yew and New China

According to Dr. Mahathir, Chinese in China nowadays don't listen to Lee Kuan Yew anymore. Dr. Mahathir reportedly said: “In a small group, you may look clever. (But) when he goes to China. The Chinese there don’t listen (to him). The Chinese don’t respect him because he has been marginalised by the Chinese around the world”.

I do not know to what extent what Dr. Mahathir has said about Lee vis-a-vis China is true but I am very certain that nowadays, China, with its much better educated and trained as well as more exposed leaders, is now able and willing to consult a much wider range of opinions and advices on world and regional affairs outside China, including Malay- and English-language ones.

China's younger and more broad-minded leaders can now communicate directly with George Bush, Tony Blair and John Howard without first going through Harry Lee. But it seems that if Harry wants to continue to offer his opinions to China, he is still welcome. China has always been appreciating Dr.Mahathir's strategic insights and perspectives on world affairs and international politics.

I am not surpirsed Mahathir is making such a claim.

Mahathir could never figure out how a small nation as Singapore could defy his wishes while he was the PM of Malaysia and he would never forgive Lee KY for pissing him off while LKY was the PM and now as MM.

But one thing for sure , Lee KY is smarter and less corrupt (if any ) than Mahathir.
If Lee KY was the PM for Malaysia, the nationa would have achieved developed country status before 1990 and need not wait for 2020.

And guess what , from the sad state of affairs currently Malaysia is in , I bet that even by 2020 , Malaysia would not be a developed nation !

The remarks by Lee Kuan Yew must be seen in proper context.

LYK gave a speech during the IMF/World bank meeting in Singapore on 15 Sep 2006. The above controversial remarks was made during the Q&A session in response to questions from the floor regarding "the little red-dot" surrounded by green, the famous dressing down by former Indonesian PM Habibie years ago. Habibie wanted LKY to endorse him together with the Chinese in Indonesia and he refused. Also, he mentioned about the causeway/crooked bridge problem with Malaysia (Mahathir).

Watch it yourself and comment.

dear sophie, Clare Street was just the name of the street in Ipoh where I was born and I grew up as a town boy debating all kinds of issues with the good, the bad and the ugly since 6 or 7 years old. It is not a secret code in Al Qaeda's encyclopedia of asymetrical warfare:) cheers.
