M' sia, USA to negotiate FTA again next week

According to Bloomberg, US ambassador to Malaysia James Keith has publicly cautioned that unless "substantial progress" is made in the first formal round of Malaysia-United State Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiation to be conducted next week, its conclusion may be delayed "indefinitely" because " there is a time limit on how much energy both (the Malaysian and US) governments can put into this".

The FTA, I'm afraid is "A Bridge Too Far". There is very strong opposition to it from an unusual combination of environmentalists, social activists, plain Anti-American groups and powerful establshment people who fear it as a threat to the NEP and protected domestic markets.

There is a lot of misunderstanding and misinformation out there about the FTA.

There are legitimate threats and concerns raised by the FTA, and it will take a very knowledgeable and talented team on the Malaysian side to negotiate a fair agreement - which we do not have.
