Younger fans of Victor Hugo' s Les Miserables
Last evening, Xiao Qing and her young friends came to my house and asked me to explain to them the historical context of Les Miserables. Les Miserables a timeless classic. The story, and the issues it explores are perfectly relevant today.
I got my children to read the book - the original, not one the simplified books for young students.
Unfortunately, the standard of English among youngsters these days is less than desirable.
At their age, I had no problem reading the book, but not the standard of English in schools now..
Xiao Qing's parents and grandfather are more worried about youths mistaking Transformer, Robotcop, Ultraman and Superman as their cultural heroes.
