India strives for balanced growth in economy

The high rates of growth 'in India in the past twenty years or so must have accelerated many socio-cultural changes in the fairly well-known center of ancient civilisation. But, there is a school of thought among development economists that there is a need to balance GDP-defined growth with other socio-economic indicators like the Gini Coefficient. As PM Manmohan Singh pointed out in very clear language earlier this year, providing children with sufficient nutrition is a now a challenge. Dr. 'Singh also called for scientific breakthrough in India''s agriculture and expressed concerns over the current condition of science 'as well as mathematics education 'for younger people of the secular republic.
