There were major differences in the response of the respective governments to the protests in Egypt and Iran. The authorities in Egypt were relatively restrained, though the police initially reacted violently and killed and injured some protesters. The Iranian protests in 2009 were brutally suppressed, and current sporadic protests are still being dealt with an iron fist.
