50,000 PLA troops mobilised for quake relief

Some 50,000 troops of China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) have reportedly been mobilised and deployed for search, rescue and relief missions in southwest China which was hit by a powerful earthquake. Formed as a workers' and peasants' guerrilla force under communists' leadership in Nanchang in 1927 to combat the conventional forces of Kuomintang, warlords as well as foreign powers, the PLA is estimated to number 2.3 million troops as of 2005 and it is distributed and also structured geographically in 8 Military Area Commands, viz. Beijing, Shenyang, Jinan, Nanjing, Guangzhou, Lanzhou as well as Chengdu.

The PLA is the world's greatset people's army. Mao Tze Tung led the legendry "LONG mARCH" with 80,000 men of the Red Army; that took them over a distance of 8,000 miles and at the end of the long march, only less 8000 survived to continue the war against the KMT.

The Americans gave unlimited military aid to KMT because the USA knew that the KMT was the weaker of the two sides. The USA as has been the usual hoped to control China by supporting Chiang's weaker side in the civil war.

At the height of their power, the Red Army only numbered 30,000 and the won in the war against a KMT army of 4 million men. To all my Chinese brothers go read the facinating story of the Long March. The world's greatest epic story.
