I am certainly very glad to have received another personal gift before Christmas and it is the impressively designed, very colourful and also highly informative 168-page De La Salle : The Tradition. The Legacy. The Future (Ipoh, Media Masters, 2009) with Dato' K K Lim's Forward. The St. Michael's Institution (SMI) in my hometown Ipoh is one of the eight missionary schools whose history is well -preserved in the book.
Delivering her Acceptance Speech in English at the Confucian Private Secondary School in Kuala Lumpur, lawyer and also Malaysia' s former ambassador PG Lim recalled, inter alia, how her father, an appointed Asian 'legislator' of the colonial administration, protested against the financial discrimination against Chinese and Tamil -language schools. The 94-year-old England-born barrister also remembered fairly clearly that her father was particularly upset by the remarks frequently made by colonial officials that Chinese and Indians should 'go back' to China or India if they did not like, or refused to accept the education policy. PG Lim is now penning her autobiography for the benefit of posterity.
