Like it or not, Europe now faces the return of history not only in the form of a resurgent Russia in its east, but also a fairly bellicose and increasingly powerful Iran (Persia in ancient history) to its southeast.

I'm afraid it will nurture some of the less savoury tendencies from Europe's pass.
For hundreds of years, the main military and civilisational threat to Western Europe came from "The East" - the Middle East and the Russian steppes. Its almost built into the racial memory of Europeans, like a bad nightmare best forgotten.
hopefully, things can be sorted out in peaceful manners.
