Supporting self-determination of East Timor

In June 1994, I represented Malaysian human rights NGOs to attend the 1st Asia-Pacific Conference On East Timor (APCET I) in Manila. Indonesia under Suharto certainly did not like it and it applied diplomatic pressures trying to stop the conference. But, the conference proceeded, amid political tension, with the support of the Catholic Church and many prominent citizens of the Philippines.
