Peace statements recalled in printed words

Statement by Datuk Wan Sidek Wan Abdul Rahman, Head of the Malaysian Delegation at the signing ceremony of the Peace Accords between the Government of Malaysia and the Commmunist Party of Malaya, and between the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand and the Communist Party of Malaya, in Haadyai on 2 December, 1989:

"On behalf of the Malaysian Government, I would like to record our sincere gratitute to the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand for its co-operation and assistance in bringing about the peaceful end of the prolonged armed struggle of the Communist Party of Malaya. With the signing of the agreement between the Government of Malaysia and the CPM and the signing of another agreement between the Kingdom of Thailand and the CPM, I believe this augurs well for peace and prosperity to the people of the two countries, particularly those who live at our common border. Indeed it goes without saying that co-operation between the two countries, particularly on matters relating to security, has always been good and cordial. This morning's event truly attests to that fact. For us in Malaysia, I believe with the end of the armed activities related to the CPM, more development efforts could be brought to the border areas concerned. As for the country generally, it will certainly pave the way for a more concerted socio-economic development efforts by the Malaysian Government for the benefit of all Malaysians"

Statement by Chin Peng, Secretary-General of the Communist Paty of Malaya at the signing ceremony of the Peace Accords between the Government of Malaysia and the Communist Party of Malaya, and between the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand and the Communist Party of Malaya in Haadyai on 2 December, 1989 (text read in Bahasa Malaysia):

" The delegations of the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand, the Government of Malaysia and the Communist Party of Malaya have held a series of peace talks and reached a successful conclusion as evidenced by the signing of the two peace agreements. We are pleased with the outcome of these talks. The agreements that have just been signed are in keeping with our Party's policy for the realization of peace. Besides, they are also consistent with the current historical trend where the people of the whole world are striving for peace and democracy as well as consistent with the interests of the people of our two countries - Malaysia and Thailand. We deemed both the agreements to terminate armed activities that have been going on for 41 years through peace negotiation an honourable settlement. Without doubt, this settlement which is just and reasonable to all parties concerned has been achieved in the spirit of mutual understanding and accomodation. We believed that the signing of these agreements will mark a new chapter in the history of our motherland and will contribute significantly to the realization of prosperity and stability in Malaysia and in the Thai-Malaysian border region. As Malaysian citizens, we pledge our loyalty to His Majesty the Yang Di Pertuan Agong and the country. As one of the signatories, we promised to carry out the agreements to the letter. We shall disband our armed units and destroy our weapons to show our sincerity to terminate the armed struggle. Last but not least, please allow me, on behalf of the delegation of the Communist Party of Malaya, to express our heartfelt gratitude to the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand for providing valuable assistance for the tripartite peace talks and acting as witness to the peace agreement between the Government of Malaysia and the Communist Party of Malaya as well as playing host to this historic signing ceremony. I also would like to convey our special appreciation to General Chaowalit Yongchaiyudh for his far-sightedness and to Major General Kitty Ratanajaya for his efforts in making the peace negotiations a success. Thank you" (the text was read in Bahasa Malaysia by Chin Peng)

Statement by General Tan Sri Chaovalit Yongchaiyudh, Head of the Thai Delegation at the signing ceremony of the Peace Accords between the Government of Malaysia and the Communist Party of Malaya, and between the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand and the Communist Party of Malaya, in Haadyai on 2 December, 1989:

" I indeed feel most honoured and delighted for having been designated by the Prime Minister General Chatichai Choonhaven to represent the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand in the peace signing between the Government of Malaysia, the Communist Party of Malaya and our Government. Today is marked as one of the most important to Malaysia, the Communist Party of Malaya and Thailand. It will be recorded in our history as one of the world's days of peace. We have long suffered from armed conflicts. Our ideologies differed. Yet, eventually, realism recognised that differences and problems could never be solved by force. Negotiations between the three parties then commenced, seeking peace through termination of armed activities. Concurrently the disbandment of the CPM's armed units resulted in the following agreement. The Government of the Kingdom of Thailand, the Government of Malaysia and the Communist Party of Malaya, consistent with their common desire for reconciliation and peace, have reached two mutual agreements, one between the Government of Malaysia and the Communist Party of Malaya and the other between the Internal Security Operations Command Region Four of the Kingdom of Thailand and the Communist Party of Malaya to terminate all armed activities and bring peace to the entire Thai-Malaysian border region and Malaysia. Former members of the disbanded armed units led by the Communist Party of Malaya have given their pledge to Thailand and Malaysia to respect the laws of these two countries and to participate in socio-economic development for the benefit of the people. Thailand and Malaysia will provide fair treatment to these members. The Government of Malaysia will in due course allow former members of the disbanded armed units led by the Communist Party of Malaya who are Malaysian citizens or who have become Malaysian citizens to freely participate in political activities within the framework of the Federal Constitution and laws in Malaysia. All three parties recognise that this honourable settlement will bring prosperity, stability and security to the Thai-Malaysian border region and Malaysia. The Government of Malaysia and the Communist Party of Malaya extend their heartfelt gratitude to the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand for its efforts in providing facilities for the holding of the tripartite peace talks and in bringing about the successful conclusion of the peace talks. I would like to express my sincere thanks to all those whose efforts made this happen, and wish everyone present at this remarkable occasions all the happiness. May peace last forever, bringing to all of us Malaysians and Thais tranquility, contentment and prosperity, with mutual understanding among all people and races living in this region."
