Hi James,
Historians who are willing to cut through the emotional bagagge of the Cold War will recognise the Soviet Army as the key enabler to the Allied victory in WWII.

Nazi Germany started its campaign with a superb war machine, but it bled to death on the plains of Eastern Europe fighting against the Red Army. The Allies' landing at Normandy found a much weakened German army.

In any case, whatever the strategic balance at the time, Normandy landing was a great operational success that ebentually led to the formation of a two-front assault on the Third Reich.
