I first read Victor Hugo's book as a teenager, and have re-read it several times since. Its just such a wonderful book, with multiple layers of meaning. It examines moral failure and redemption, good vs. evil, justice vs. law, society, politics, religion. Its even a love story and an action adventure.
The 1998 movie starring Liam Neeson was quite good, but a movie can never do justice to the full richness of the book. I've never had a chance to watch the Musical, though it has been performed in various cities for more than 20 years...
Unfortunately I still can't get my daughter to read such a thick book, and she finds the English a bit difficult.

it's difficult indeed to read the book as hugo loves to divert to illustrate one point with great details.
