To answer a question posed by EG Yap via email: in my opinion, the best introductionary book on the alternative, non-official and critical history of Malaya is Where Monsoons Meet: A People's History of Malaya. It was published in Malay and Chinese in the 1980s by an academic NGO, Institute of Social Analysis (INSAN). I think there are still some copies left over with publisher and distributor Mr. Chong Ton Sin.
